Dress For Success: Exercise With Confidence

Jacket + Leggings from Jane.com
Exercising with confidence is a hard endeavor. Whether your at a public gym, running out on the streets, or even working out at home; getting your body moving and sweating takes confidence. Its about putting on those blinders and getting into the zone, finding that sweet spot where all that matters is hitting that next mile or pushing hard for that final lift. Our bodies are beautiful and we should celebrate that by treating them with care. We should be exercising for the joy of movement and not as a punishment for dormant motion.

"Workout because you love your body, not because you hate it."

When I exercise I stare down my reflection, I call this my "Eye Of The Tiger" moment. I look at my whole self and take in all that I am. I pull my shoulders back, tuck my stomach in towards the spine and take a deep breathe. I repeat, "I can do this, I can do more, I can be more, I can push harder, sink lower, press deeper, and fight through the pain." I do this all with a cheshire smile, because I know I'm strong, and I know how much more I can give to my workout. I have the mental strength to keep up with the physical demands I place on my body. I dont stop when its hurts, I stop when its over. I challenge myself to put those gym blinders on and focus on the reasons why I am exercising. I exercise because;

  1. I love movement! I cant keep still and I'm almost always in motion. Because of my dance background, I have a strong connection with the musculature of the human body. Every step, extension of a limb or release of the spine breathes in new life into our bodies. It's fascinating to me. I'm in constant awe of the grace, strength and beauty that is the human form. I love the way our bodies move and never want to take that gift for granted.
  2. I want to live a happy and healthy life. I want to find a balance between enjoying my happy treats (a daily dose of Chocolate and Diet Coke, thank you very much!) and treating my body to what it craves- aka water, protein, vitamins, fruits and veggies. I want the good stuff and the good for you stuff. I exercise because it helps me maintain a healthy weight and gets my body moving and grooving.
  3. "Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't shoot their husbands. They just don't.".... Ok this one, not so much Elle Woods, but I see her reasoning pretty clear. Endorphins make you happy and increases your self confidence. When I exercise I feel great! I love the confidence it gives me in and outside of the gym. I feel more well rounded as a mother and wife when I take that little bit of time to do something that benefits me. I'm happier when I work out and I love the stress relief it brings me.
I not only mentally prepare for my workout, but I physically prepare for it by dressing my body for success. When I teach I bring my A game. My hair is pulled back tight, (you can thank my classic top knot as my signature Barre babe look), I wear form fitting attire that shows how my body is moving so I know if my form is correct or not, and I usually put a splash of makeup on my face. Nothing dramatic, just enough to give me that confidence when I'm giving myself the "Eye Of The Tiger" look. It's not about dressing to impress or intimidate, for me its about taking pride in my body. Showing my clients that I am a professional, I dont roll out of bed and go teach. I take the time to physically prepare myself to take on the roll of instructor, drill sergeant, and fitness guru. How embarrassing would it be if I came into class looking like a hot mess!?!? As a certified instructor, I know what I'm talking about when I tell you to lift your leg higher, open your turn out, or pull the abs into the spine for safer support of the lower back. So when I instruct, I aim to present myself as a professional in my field of work.

Looking good when I work out helps me feel good. I love uGo Apparel's motto, "Look Good, Feel Good," I dont dress to impress anyone but myself...because when I workout i'm not doing it for the attention, I'm sweating for me. My choice of workout clothes definitely influences my attitude and fortitude in my classes. My confidence radiates to my clients and helps inspire them to be their best selves.

Shape Magazine journalist, Julie Ricevuto, wrote an excellent article about how our workout clothes affect our performance in and outside of the gym. She listed the top reasons why dressing for success during our workouts improve our overall performance. They are,

- They give your brain a boost

- They up the intimidation factor

- They can improve performance

- Help prevent injuries and offer protection

Dressing up for your workout, per the examples listed above, can improve your over all performance. Your outward appearance reflects your mindset, it tells the world you are ready to sweat and crush your goals. I loved the idea that Ricevuto's article brought up of "enclothed cognition," which refers to a sort of mental shift you experience when you wear certain clothes. One study in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology suggests that clothing influences behavior and attitudes because it carries a symbolic meaning. So, what you wear is actually subconsciously changing how you act.

Dr. Jonathan Fader, sports psychologist for the New York Mets, says these findings totally hold-up in real life. "When you put on new fitness gear, you begin to get into character like an actor putting on a costume for a performance," says Fader. "As a result, you expect to have a better performance, making you more mentally prepared for the task." Basically, when you wear cute workout wear, not only are you more inclined to actually be active, but Fader says those tank tops and racer-backs will also make you feel more confident in your abilities, which could lead to an improved focus, motivation, and gains.

Dressing for success is a great motto for 2018. It can apply to virtually any situation, like a final piece of the puzzle, this quote completes my health and fitness goals this year. For 2018 I created practical goals that promote self care and good health that specifically focus's on NOT involving my scale or counting calories. Regardless of the number on the scale, I want to feel beautiful and strong in the body i'm in. Thus I want to dress my body in activewear that flaunts my curves, provides support, and most importantly; gives me the inspiration to exercise with confidence.

Cheers To A New Year, A New You, And New Mistakes

New Years Resolutions and Aberrations
“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.
Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something.
So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life. Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”-Neil Gaiman
2017 brought many mistakes to my life and lessons learned. I gained the courage from my mistakes to try new endeavors, hello blogging and @twinkletoesbarrebie! My mistakes encouraged me to seek help when I needed it most, I think Yoda said it best- "The greatest teacher, failure is". The failures and mistakes we make shape our character, and our future outcomes of success. I love the quote above from Neil Gaiman, "If we are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world." What a beautiful concept of failure, it is simply the opportunity to better themselves and the world that we coexist in. Together, our failures turn into success's and thats when the beauty of change blossoms into hope for the New Year.

My year was also full of achievements and personal bests. I completed my First Triathlon, Breastfed my daughter for 16 months, improved my interpersonal relationships and started to travel. I had many success's in the small and simple goals I set for myself. I may not have been consistent on a daily basis, but I found consistency in my desire to be the best version of myself.  That's all I really wanted, to be happy and healthy.

2018 is hours away and I have my sights set on new aspirations that will achieve the ultimate goal of  improved happiness and health.  For now, here is my list. Simple yet achievable. Some goals are surface level, while others will challenge me from the inside out. In due time I will break them down and go into detail about why I picked these specific goals and what steps I'm taking to master them.

May your New Year Resolutions reflect a  year of positive changes that will guide your mistakes and turn them into triumphs you can celebrate throughout the next 12 months. May you find the time to focus on your health, your happiness, and overall well being. Challenge yourself to set an impossible goal and take the steps to achieve it. Be kind to yourself and others as you set your sights on aspirations that may seem simple but take great effort. Simplify and edify your 2018 to be the best year yet to become the best version of yourself. Happy New Year Friends and may your ring in 2018 with those who will challenge you to be greater tomorrow than you were today.

“I hope you will have a wonderful year, that you'll dream dangerously and outrageously, that you'll make something that didn't exist before you made it, that you will be loved and that you will be liked, and that you will have people to love and to like in return. And, most importantly (because I think there should be more kindness and more wisdom in the world right now), that you will, when you need to be, be wise, and that you will always be kind.” -Neil Gaiman

Goga: The New Yoga Revolution

Goga: Where Barnyard Meets Downward Dog
Interview with Derk Westover, Co-Founder of Goga LLC

"And suddenly you know...it's time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings."

I love trying new fitness styles and putting my trust in the magic of new beginnings... and I've gotta tell you, Goga did not disappoint! It was one of those experiences that you go into totally blind and don't know what to expect, but once you unroll your mats and begin class, you feel right at home. I brought my good friends Kim and Rachael, @talkwordytome + @rachael_seeley, with me and they were hilarious! We had our Goga session on top of a mountain at sunset, so we had the perfect backdrop as we practiced our hour long yoga session. We had the biggest smiles on our faces and couldn't stop giggling, it was like a middle school slumber party but 1000 times better! Yoga is all about calming the mind and finding inner peace within the flow of your movements..but Goga  flips that idea right on its back. It's a zen party full of laughter, silly goat parkour and the occasional barnyard shenanigans like goat droppings and mat chewing. By the end of class you'll be grinning ear to ear and will soon find that even the most novice of yogi's can become a talented gogi!

A few weeks ago, I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Derek Westover, the co-founder of Goga LLC in Utah Valley, and got the inside scoop on the creative process of making Yoga with Goats a thriving business venture. The team behind Goga, Derek and Benson Richardson are incredible, and offer a unique fitness experience that is revolutionizing the Yoga game.

Describe the “Goga” experience in 5 words or less!
I have five words for you - where goats and yoga meet!

How did the idea of Goga develop?
A friend sent me a viral video of Goat Yoga in Oregon. This is where classes officially started and the trend of doing yoga with goats in a group setting began. I raised goats in high school and my friend knew that. I laughed at the video and the idea and joked about it possibly working.
Just a week later The idea of starting Goga here in Utah became realized when another friend (Benson Richardson) and I were sitting at my home watching TV. A news clip came on covering another goat yoga group in Arizona. We both looked at each other and the wheels started turning. I showed Benson the video I had been sent. That day we decided to try something different and take a chance!

What steps did you take to make this dream a reality?
Planning was easy. Invest in some goats and find a place to keep them. We had to stop and ask ourselves though: would people in Utah County be interested in doing a yoga class with goats? What if it didn't work out? We, Benson and myself, decided to take a chance. I mean, if goat yoga wasn't going to be successful, then we'd be stuck with a bunch of cute fluffy baby goats...darn ;)

How did you spread the word out about your new fitness style?
After getting the goats we gathered some friends and created a promotional video to announce that goat yoga was coming to Utah! We released the video on our social media page and it quickly received a lot of attention. We sold more tickets than anticipated (13 of the 20)and we were thrilled. We didn't advertise at all. Word of mouth gave us the attention we needed. Students, or Gogis as we call them, left happy from every class and they shared the new trend with all their friends. After March, we sold out every class. Each class in the summer had a max of 26 students. We wanted to keep the goat to people ratio even so anyone who participated could get plenty of goat time.Throughout the summer we were featured on KSL News, KBYU 11, Fox 13's "The Place", Salt Lake Magazine, Utah Valley Magazine and Park City TV. All these news stations were so easy to work with and so helpful in spreading the word...without us even asking them to!
Why Goats? What are the health benefits to utilizing animals in your Yoga practice?
As you know, there are multiple health benefits to practicing yoga. There are also many benefits to participating in animal-assisted therapy. The goats are the main part of the class. Animals, goats included, have been known to help people with depression, lower stress and fatigue levels, and help you forget about pain. This is exactly why we do what we do. We want to help people.

Whats the "typical" Gogi experience like? Does one need previous Yoga experience to participate?
Anyone is welcome at our classes! We welcome everyone. The atmosphere at the classes is great and there is no judging at all. If you're afraid to do yoga in front of people, don't be! The focus is always on the goats. They'll take your mind off of the fact that you're exercising.

Tell me more about the Goats!
A little bit about the goats. They are Nigerian Dwarf Goats and they are a milk breed. They give for healthy creamy delicious milk. These goats stay fairly small, making them great pets and great yoga goats. We own them and they live happily in a pasture in Orem, Utah. There are ten altogether and seven of them come to the Goga classes. Their names are Pepsi, Fresca, Pepper, Dew, Sprite, Squirt, and Coke. When they were babies, I along with my wife Randee, bottle fed them, out of pop bottles. That is how they got their names. We plan to name all of their kids after candy bars. Goats are natural climbers. Some immediately want to jump on people and others need some coaxing. So we use some treats (cinnamon graham crackers) for all of the goats and they jump right up there! It's so fun to watch. Benson and I both grew up with goats, we know how much fun they can be and we love sharing them with people.
With all the varied boutique fitness styles out there, does your company have a lot of competition?
We were the first goat yoga in Utah, but at least two more have started since we've been going. One is in Clearfield and the other is in Southern Utah. Competition is a good thing though! We were happy to hear that others were following the trend and sharing the goat love...there's plenty to go around!

Thats wonderful that you support other's in their Goga journey, did you receive the same kind of encouragement when starting Goga LLC?
At first our friends thought we were crazy and that goat yoga would never work and become successful. In fact, we didn't receive very much support from them. Boy were they wrong! There were a select few that helped us get started and we very much appreciate all their help.

What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs?
Now people approach us asking for advice on starting a business. Benson and I give them the classic tips of find someone who can help you get started (the Small Business Development Center in Orem was GREAT help to us), set goals, etc. But the biggest tip I always give is BE DIFFERENT! Everyone around here thinks they are a food nutritionist or a personal trainer. You want to be one of those things? Great! Do it! But be different and set yourself apart from everyone else and get noticed. I often joke and say, "get a goat!", but in all reality sometimes that's what it takes...well not that exactly, but you know what I mean! Don't be afraid to take a chance. The biggest mistake you can make in life is being afraid you'll make a mistake.

"If you desire to make a difference in the world, you must be different from the world."- Elaine Dalton

The big takeaway from my interview is to follow your heart. Dare to be different, embrace what makes you unique, and don't be afraid to try something new. Whether your'e starting a business, jumping into a new fitness routine, or want to do something outside your comfort zone. Just be yourself and go for it. No one is you, and that is your superpower. I want to thank Derek, Benson, and their outstanding team of Goats for following their heart and making their Goga dreams a reality here in Utah. As a animal and fitness lover, I gotta tell you that you've created something truly special and I cant wait to spread the news about this awesome new fitness craze! Goga is a refreshing experience that brings so much light and love into the Fitness industry. Namaste Gogis!
